The Women’s Impact Network of New Hanover County (WIN) is a diverse group of women who harness the power of their collective giving to make a difference in New Hanover County.
WIN members each make an annual personal financial contribution of $600 to create a grant pool, select an area of philanthropic focus, solicit grant applications from qualifying nonprofits, and vote for the organization they believe is most deserving of their financial investment.
WIN members want to be well-informed philanthropists, and to ensure that their investment is used effectively and has true community impact. We meet with community experts each year to learn more about that year’s focus area and about grant making in general.
Members also like to network! WIN meetings provide opportunities for members to connect and have fun as well. We’re always seeking to expand our membership, and invite you to learn more about WIN and how, through our collective giving framework, you can make a difference in your local community.
WIN grants are made to projects and organizations within four areas of concern: education, health and wellness, the environment, and arts and culture. We rotate our focus each year among the four.
Each year, we invite local nonprofits whose work is connected to that year’s focal area to submit a letter of intent to apply for a grant. Our large grants and small grants committees review the submissions; those organizations whose applications that fall within our guidelines are asked to submit a formal application with additional information. The applications are reviewed by the relevant committees, which identify the strongest applications. The small grants committee makes final decisions on the small grants. The large grant finalist applications are sent to the membership for review and a vote.
Founded in 2011, WIN began making grants the following year. The amount of money given out in grants in any given year depends on the number of WIN members. As WIN has grown, so has our ability to make an impact on more than one organization.
