 Positions, Application Process and Timeline



The Role

WIN’s board is responsible for the overall strategic direction of WIN, including:

  • Setting policies assigning priorities, and exercising leadership that will help WIN achieve its mission, goals and objectives;
  • Establishing the structure and composition of committees needed to fulfill WIN’s purpose;
  • Approving and managing the budget; and
  • Building WIN's membership and the resulting Grants Pool.

Board members serve 2 year terms, which are structured so that approximately 1/3 of the Board turns over every year. The current Board has 9 members, a number that is set by the Board. In addition, the Board may appoint members as needed.

The Opportunity

Three (3) Board Member positions are coming available in November 2021, each for a 2-year term. 

The Board seeks nominations of women who are motivated to guide WIN to new levels of excellence in delivering our mission to "make a significant impact in New Hanover County."  As our membership is increasingly diverse across many dimensions (age, stage of life, non-profit/for-profit, work-at-home/employed/retired, professions, race, religion, orientation, etc), we want to see that diversity reflected the Board.  

The Skills

We are looking for  Board members who bring a strategic mindset, a get-it-done approach and strong interpersonal skills, combined with a collaborative, inclusive style. 

Specific skills/experience that would be welcome include: 

  • Broad knowledge and relationships across the non-profit landscape in NHC OR Non-profit leadership experience
  • Communications expertise

The Expectations: WIN Board members are expected to

  • Be a WIN member in good standing
  • Attend monthly board meetings
  • Fulfill at least one of the following roles:
    • Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary
    • Committee Representative for Welcome/Membership, Philanthropy, Grants, or  Community Engagement 
  • Actively participate in WIN functions
  • Serve as proactive ambassador for WIN in the community
  • Actively recruit at least 2 new members

The Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee is appointed by the Board each year, and is responsible for presenting a recommended set of candidates to the Board for approval and subsequent member voting. Two long serving Board members, who are completing their service in November,  will Chair the Nominating Committee:  Kate Phillips Connolly and Laura McCabe.

  • Nov 5          Application Deadline
  • Nov 12-19  Membership Vote
  • Nov 22        Notify Applicants
  • Dec 2          Annual General Meeting / Announcement of New Board to membership
